Well, here's a thought: Stay in the Senate until your term is up OR until you are elected governor, and resign not one day sooner.
I am not sure Kay can afford to not resign... yet her stature in some ways is diminished as soon as she resigns... her unofficial federal resources are also depleted when she resigns... plus she does not have anything to fall back on if she loses to Rick.
