Rick's web ad...

I don't know if it is just a political urban legend, but there is a truism that says the taller, better looking candidate usually wins the election. There are exceptions, but I think I read that the taller candidate for president has won 4 out of 5 times in American history...

It makes sense then that Rick's peeps would include a photo of Bill White standing next to Yao Ming in a web ad... first of all Yao Ming might attract more viewers by himself especially with the NBA playoffs happening right now... second of all and more importantly Bill White looks completely silly and literally "small" standing next to Yao Ming.

The Texas Tribune's Elise Hu decided there was some sinister racial motive behind including Yao Ming in the video (link). Excerpt follows...
So, why Yao? Does this say something about a disdain for tall basketball stars? Chinese people? Or just cap-and-trade, as the web video mentions?
I agree with the lone commenter on the Texas Tribune...
  • Why would you ask if showing Yao is somehow anti-Chinese, without asking if the video is also anti-white for showing him with a white baby? Is this an anti-education ad because there's a picture of White in a cap and gown, too? I don't like Perry either, but come on, there are real issues out there without manufacturing fake outrage. We get a lot more mileage from staying on important topics than spinning our wheels in racism charges.

Fake outrage and race baiting is a quick way to lose credibility. Then again journalists don't seem to care much about credibility these days... just ratings and viewers.

Maybe there is a subtle message there about cap and trade hurting our economic competitiveness against China which would not be bound by cap and trade... or that Bill White is a communist sympathizer because Yao Ming is technically required to be a communist as part of his Chinese citizenship...

I doubt it...

Always look to Occam's Razor for the explanation...

I think the picture was included because it was not flattering to Bill White. It makes him look insignificant...

That is the most simple and most logical explanation.

Whatever it was about, Rick's ad has more views than Bill White's ad on YouTube... although Bill White is paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to run his ad on television in his supposed home base of Houston so more people have likely seen the Bill White spot on television...

Hey now, campaign characters. Be nice. I know a lot of you on both sides, so I don't want any overly foul language, personal attacks on anyone other than the candidates themselves, or other party fouls. I will moderate the heck out of you if you start breaking the bounds of civility.
