This gay marriage thing... Rick and Kay weigh in...

Yesterday, a liberal judge in Dallas ruled... basically... that a gay married Texas couple could get a divorce, and she said that Texas marriage laws violate equal protection and all of that...

AG Greg Abbott said he was going to challenge the ruling.

Rick and Kay both put out statements supporting Abbott... both against gay marriage.

Twitter feedback is not always the best indicator of true public opinion, but this comment interested me...

@TeamKay I guarantee you that you lost votes from moderate Texans with that arch-conservative, backward worldview.

Is Kay sacrificing her base to prevent Rick from fully consolidating the conservative base? For her to jump on this issue so quickly shows that her campaign understands what everyone else understands. Republican Primary voters in Texas are conservative. The March 2 primary will be dominated by conservatives not moderates...

Anyone who thinks conservatives won't play the biggest role in the Republican primary is just not familiar with Texas politics... Kay's peeps have signaled that they are trying to outflank Rick or at least confuse people about who is the real conservative...

Does Kay moving to the right rhetorically look like pandering? Does it undermine her rhetoric about wanting a big tent party? I think Kay walks a fine line and will probably alienate a lot of her moderate Republicans the Rasmussens of the world are expecting will turn out and vote for her.

Hey now, campaign characters. Be nice. I know a lot of you on both sides, so I don't want any overly foul language, personal attacks on anyone other than the candidates themselves, or other party fouls. I will moderate the heck out of you if you start breaking the bounds of civility.
