It would be very cool to be able to hop on a high speed train and head from Houston to Dallas, or Austin to San Antonio, or some other combination. How are we going to pay for it, though? AMTRAK is a subsidized mess. Didn't the TTC have high speed rail corridors in it... paid for by private companies rather than taxpayers? I guess I don't get the opposition to the corridor.High-speed corridors were designated by Congress more than a decade ago. In Texas, U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison is a key supporter.
But until recently the corridors haven’t received enough funding for anything more than conceptual planning. Obama’s announcement clears the way for more detailed planning of corridors in places such as Texas, Florida, the Chicago region, and Southeast routes through North Carolina and Louisiana.
It’s the second piece of good news for rail fans in six months.
In October, Congress set aside $1.5 billion and urged states and private developers to compete for the funding and develop faster rail lines. On March 20, the Texas Department of Transportation formally requested funds for improvements to the Fort Worth-to-Killeen/Fort Hood route and other lines.

Kay supporting high speed rail in Texas...
Kay has just been buried by Rick lately in the press. She is just hardly even mentioned compared to Rick, but she does get a plug in this article about Obama's high speed rail plans (link). Excerpt follows...

Hey now, campaign characters. Be nice. I know a lot of you on both sides, so I don't want any overly foul language, personal attacks on anyone other than the candidates themselves, or other party fouls. I will moderate the heck out of you if you start breaking the bounds of civility.
